Derry capture historic three in a row - 16B Championship Final 2008
Derry maintained their hold on the All-Ireland U16B competition on Sunday, defeating Offaly in impressive style in the final. The Derry fans were treated to a fine display of camogie from start to finish, played in glorious conditions in Ashbourne. While the entire team are to be commended, right half forward Karen Kielt deserves a special mention, notching up an outstanding individual tally of 2-12.
Winning Derry Team - All Ireland Champions 2008
Derry raced ahead early in the
game against a team who were very much an unknown quantity. While Kielt, Grainne McNicholl and Mary Kelly
bagged goals apiece, Offaly struggled to get into the game and were given
little room by a tight Derry defence. Derry were
in the ascendancy, going in 3-8 to 0-2 ahead at the break.
In the second half, the Oak Leaf side continued where they had left off,
with further goals from McNicholl, Kelly and Teresa McElroy. Derry scored
at will while Offaly could only manage 2 points from play in the entire game.
This is a very strong Derry side who
have made effective use of players with the experience from the previous
All-Ireland campaigns, peppered with exciting talent such as Kielt and
McNicholl. Congratulations to all the
players and to the management team of Eugene Burns, Maura McCloy, Pamela
Frizelle and Gearalt Ó Mianáin.
The girls will enjoy their win but will look to top it off with an Ulster
title. Derry now face Down
in the Ulster Final (date to be confirmed).
