Div 3 - Derry v Westmeath - Match Preview

Derry’s second team are home to Westmeath in the third and final game of their league campaign.  With three of the starting fifteen from the last two games away with other commitments, manager Donna Mc Closkey says “I will have good chance to look at some of the other young players in the panel and it will be a good opportunity for them to gain some experience at a very high level.  A lot of this panel are just out of under 16 in 2007 and we have had two very hard but valuable games against Offaly and Down.  But let’s remember that these two teams have been playing in Division 3 for the last number of years.”  Mc Closkey points out that there is a great spirit with in this group of players who are eager to learn and what better way than to play games against great teams like Down.

With Derry and Westmeath out of the running to qualify, both sides will be playing for pride and looking to end the Junior league campaign on a high. For Derry’s young camogs, this campaign is all about development and experience and not necessarily results. Westmeath will obviously be favourites and will hope to lay down a marker for when the two sides meet again later in the year in the Nancy Murray Championship. But this young oak leaf side is made of strong stuff and, with a young ambitious squad that is made up almost completely of All Ireland U16 and College winning players, a first victory of the season may not be out of the question.
