Derry see off Wexford challenge
Division 2: Derry 1-11 Wexford 0-5
Derry team who defeated Wexford
The Derry seniors got off to a great start on Saturday with a
sound win over a talented Wexford side.
Despite being down a number of key players, Derry
worked as a cohesive unit to withstand the Wexford pressure and strong breeze
in the first half, with points from Oonagh Mullan, Sinead Cassidy and Maeve
McGoldrick limiting Wexford to a 2 point lead at the interval.
Derry stepped it
up a gear on the restart and with Aileen Laverty and Sinead Cassidy in good
form, Derry took hold of the game and made use
of their experience to great effect. Aileen
scored the game’s only goal after 5 minutes and some lovely points from play
from Sinead Cassidy, Maeve McGoldrick and Katrina O’Kane extended Derry’s lead.
Aileen Laverty and Katie McAuley popped the ball over from frees.
Jane Carey, Ciara
Cushnahan and Edelle Henry in particular performed well in a new defensive
line-out who will be well pleased at keeping Wexford scoreless in the second
half. The midfield partnership of Briege
Convery and Katie McAuley linked up well and supplied some great ball into the
lively forward line.
Clare O’Kane, Derry’s new captain, was delighted with the win. “This was a real team effort from start to
finish, holding a strong side such as Wexford scoreless in the second
half. I am hopeful that we can build on
this through the rest of the league campaign”.
Padraig O’Mianáin,
co-manager, was in full agreement. “This
was a good day’s work. With some key
players missing, our new players really stepped up to the mark today. We have 3 weeks until our next game which
should see some of our injured players return to push for places.”
Derry’s next game
is against Galway on 22nd March, to
be played halfway.
