Baptism of fire for young Derry Juniors
Division 3: Offaly 7-18 Derry 0-1
Derry’s young junior team lost out to an Offaly
side that on the day were too strong for the young Oak Leaf camogs. Made up almost entirely of minor players, Derry started brightly and, indeed, had Offaly on the
back foot but as the game progressed, Offaly’s experience started to show,
taking some fine points from play. Emer
Murphy in the Derry goal made a string of fine
saves under pressure. Derry
continued to battle for the full sixty minutes and never gave up and fought for
every ball. Those players involved in
colleges camogie showed well, in particular, Aine Kelly, Caoimhe Toner and
Keelin Bradley.
After the game,
team manager Donna McCloskey said “I am very proud and happy with the fighting
display shown by the girls. But it’s
hard sometimes to explain to young players at training what the speed and
intensity of playing at this level is like so they have to experience it first
hand themselves to understand it. My first game for Antrim senior team was as a
sixteen year old playing against Cork senior
team in Cork
and I learnt that day what was expected of me and I know these young girls now
understand too.”
“We had a chat in
the dressing room after the game about the challenges ahead and instead of
being down beat everyone of the girls were excited about the year ahead and are
even more determined and I have no doubt that this will be reflected in their
application to training and their performances over the next few months as this
development squad starts to find it’s feet.”
The juniors have
another tough encounter this weekend (Sunday 9th March), away to a
Down side who ran Derry very close last season
and who will be out to prove a point this year.
