Derry Senior Camogie team
recovered from their narrow defeat in Offaly by comprehensively beating Dublin in Swatragh on Sunday. The opening half was a low
scoring affair and despite missing a lot of chances Derry
went in leading by 1-2 to Dublin’s
0-1. Both defences were quite dominant in the wet conditions with captain the
rare occasion that Dublin threatened the Derry
goal, Jane Carey showed strength and determination to clear her lines. Despite
Derry’s early dominance, there was only a point difference between the sides
approaching half-time when a blistering run and shot from the on form Katie
McAuley brought a terrific save from the Dublin goalkeeper, only to be followed
up by low drive from Kate Lavery into the Dublin goal. An early second half
goal from Clare McCloy left too much between the sides and Dublin fell apart. Derry’s half
forwards were in excellent form, with Katie McAuley always a threat and an
impressive senior debut from Jane Kelly will give Derry
manager Pádraig Ó Mianáin a lot to think about. In the engine room Grainne
McGoldrick and Briege Convery fought well and both made several significant
runs into the Dublin defence whilst the sister act of Aileen and Kate
Laverty in the corner forward positions were a constant threat, foraging for
every loose ball.

Denise McCann and substitute Sinéad Cassidy (0-3) put Derry
in a comfortable lead, with the latter Ballerin player particularly impressive.
Derry played a competitive game and were strong in their
play and will be confident of beating Antrim in their next game. The nature of
this win gave manager Ó Mianáin a good chance to see a lot of his players in
action and he will have been impressed with the performances of many,
particularly substitute Sinéad Cassidy, who, although the youngest member of
the squad, should be in with a good chance of making the starting line up in
future games.
