U16's win first All Ireland title
The
weekend was also a very good one for the Ó Mianáin family, Pádraig and his wife
Susan managed the Derry team who vercame Waterford in the junior All-Ireland
semi-final 2-12 to 1-5 in Páirc Tailteann, Navan, whilst Pádraig's brother
Gearalt coached the county U16 team when they defeated felloow Ulster side
Armagh 3-3 to 1-2 in Naomh Mearnóg, Dublin on Sunday.
Winning an All-Ireland title in any sport is a wonderful achievement but winning your first is always very sweet and one that goes down in history books. When the young Derry team took to the beautiful sod in Naomh Mearnóg, they did not take long to settle as within five minutes top scorer of the day Danielle Mc Crystal had netted for the Oak Leaf side. Armagh were stunned but with hald back Michelle Rogers reading the game almost inch perfect, the Orchard girsl were not allowed a sniff of the ball with the result that they went in at the break not having score at all while the Oak Leaf camógs were ahead 1-2 to 0-0.
Under 16 Manager Donna Mc Cluskey who played intercounty for thirteen years with Antrim was in jubilant mood after the match, "everyone of those players played their hearts out and I am so proud of them, this win will do enourmous good for Derry camogie, it will serve as an inspiration to young players, as they will see what they can aspire to in the future". She further went on to say that now is the time for Derry to work on this for the future of the game.
While the opening half was all Derry the Orchard county who reached last year's All- Ireland Final came back in the second half despite the wind and rain. Two points from captain Laura Mc Guinnes and Lucey Mc Guinness brought some cheer to the Orchard county supporters, but it was not enough to thwart a young and determined Derry side. While Armagh were trying their best with Paula O'Hare trying very hard in the half backline, but on the day there was no denying that it was going to belong to Derry.
With time ticking away and the Oak Leaf looking destined to bring home the U16 Cup, the Orchard county's Petrina Cosgrove gave her side great cheer when she goaled just before the end to leave it Derry 2-3, Armagh 1-2. However, Derry's Danielle Mc Crystal crashed home the third Derry goal to secure a famous Derry win.
This win was achieved by a fine display from the centre back Michelle Rogers while centre half forward Maeve Mc Quillan proved to be a tower of strength in the half forwards and teamed up well with Keelin Bradley player of the match.
