Having been defeated at the beginning of this year’s
National League by the same opponents, this game was always going to measure
much Derry Camog’s have progressed under Pádraig Ó Mianáin’s guidance. Although
the Oakleaf girls are Ulster Champions, the All Ireland is played now as a
separate competition and Derry and Offaly were the
strongest teams in their group, meaning that a victory for Derry
would win the qualifying group.
Offaly started the game a lot stronger and were two points
ahead when Katie McAuley registered Derry’s first score
in the 13th minute. This was followed by a goal from the impressive Alisha Wilkinson. Points
from Briege Convery and Sinead Cassidy followed but the Offaly girls rallied
and sent three points over in quick succession. The midlanders were awarded a
penalty but Claire O’Kane saved well to leave Derry a
point ahead at half time: 1-3 to 0-5. A point from Offaly in the first minute
of the second half proved to be their last score and further points from Aileen
Laverty, Katie McAuley (2) and Alisha Wilkinson set up a hard earned victory, a
win which should boost Derry’s confidence and create a real sense of hope that
Derry can capture the All-Ireland in September, the first since 2000.
