Derry’s Camogs’ fine recent league form continued with this
comfortable win over Antrim at Mallusk on Sunday. Although Antrim had a strong team on show, with Jane Adams
returning to midfield, the Saffrons had no way through an airtight Derry
defence, with the Slaughtneil pairing of Clare Doherty and Helena Kelly to the
fore. The threat of Adams was nullified by Eoghan Rua’s Grainne McGoldrick who
never gave the Rossa player any chance to impose her will on the game. Three
first half goals from Sinéad Cassidy, Clare McCloy and Jane Kelly sealed this
fine win with centre half forward Katie McAuley returning to her best form,
scoring three points and causing the Antrim defence serious problems. A good measure
of a team is how its subs perform and Derry’s
replacements, Katrina O’Kane and Paula Bell, both scored second half goals to
show the strength in depth that Ó Mianáin’s squad possess.
Derry’s next competitive outing is in the Ulster Junior
championship semi-final against Armagh and if the Oakleafers’ recent form is anything to go
by, then Derry seem set to pose a serious challenge to the Orchard
county.
