Credit Union Derry Senior Camogie Championship gets underway

Action began on Thursday evening when Castledawson had a comprehensive win over Ballinderry, 3-9 to 0-6. The meeting of the ‘big two’ of Lavey and Swatragh ended in a draw, 3-9 apiece, with Paula McAtamney causing plenty of problems for slight favourites, Lavey. In the opener to this Premier showpiece, Coleraine and Banagher played out a high scoring draw, 2-12 t0 5-3 but it took an injury time point from last year’s Intermediate Champions, Coleraine, to earn a draw. A young and skilful Bellaghy team had too much for Slaughtneil, winning 2-5 to 0-7. A much weakened Dungiven team were totally outclassed by Glen, scoring only once to Glen’s 4-10 and Ballinascreen had too much firepower for Glenullin, running out comprehensive victors. Ballerin will be disappointed not to have done better against Kilrea, losing 5-3 to 2-7 whilst Lavey II outclassed Limavady 4-5 to 0-3 in the Intermediate Championship. In the Preliminary round of the Junior Championship Drumsurn inflicted a heavy defeat upon Glack. The competitive nature of these games was ideal preparation for Derry’s next Senior outing with Carlow next Sunday, a game Pádraig Ó Mianáin’s team are expected to win and should se them at the top of their group. This game will be played at a Derry venue, TBA. Judging by the crowds that were at the championship games, Derry can hope for a good home support to bolster their challenge for Al-Ireland glory.
