Derry senior captain, Slaughtneil’s Claire Doherty, is the Ulster Sportswriters’ Camogie Player of the Year for 2006. She received the award at the annual Gala Dinner in Bundoran on Saturday night. Claire was centre-back and captain of the Derry team that won the 2006 Ulster senior title with a convincing victory over Down in Mac Cumhaill Park in Ballybofey in June. Claire also captained Derry to the National League Division II and All-Ireland Junior finals, and played centre-back for Ulster in the Gael-Linn Junior Final this year.
Derry’s Katie McAuley also received a nomination for the award, as did Antrim’s Jane Adams.
