Two All-Star nominations for Derry

Katie McAuley (Castledawson) and Gráinne McGoldrick (Eoghan Rua, Coleraine) have received nominations for the 2006 Camogie Allstars team.

It is Katie’s second nomination, having previously received a nomination in 2004, while this is Gráinne’s first. A total of 45 players have been shortlisted for the Allstars, and both Derry players are in the running for a place in the forward line. Ulster’s sole other nominee is Grainne Connolly from Antrim. The team will be announced at a gala dinner in the City West Hotel in Dublin on Saturday November 11th.

Katie (19) and Gráinne (22), though still at an early stage in their playing careers, have been stalwarts for Derry and Ulster for a number of years. Gráinne’s athleticism and long striking in midfield and Katie’s explosive power and accuracy up front have been notable features in Derry’s re-emergence as a force in intercounty camogie this year.

The nominations have been warmly welcomed by the county board: “This is a great achievement for the individual players in the first instance, and also a great boost for the camogie scene, not only in their respective clubs, but throughout the county and the province. It is a reward for all the coaches and mentors who have brought them from their first puck of a ball to the very top of the game, and it shows that hard work on the training ground pays off. It is important that our young players in the county have local players they can look up to and aspire to emulate. It is also a recognition of the progress made by Derry camogie since the beginning of the year, and with a bit of luck, Derry might have even more nominations by this stage next season.”
