Derry Camogie Championship Draws 2006
There was an audible gasp as the Premier Championshiop draw was made at Derry Camogie’s recent sponsorship event in Walsh’s hotel, when reigning champions Swatragh were drawn against their closest rivals, Lavey, in the Quarter final of the Championship. Recent league form suggests that Lavey could edge this but Swatragh will have other ideas. Ballinderry have been making good progress in recent years and will prove more than a challenge for Castledawson, although the Brough girls’ experience at this level should see them through. Slaughtneil and Bellaghy could be the closest tie of the draw, whilst Greenlough have a bye. The Senior Championship should be a more predictable affair, with Coleraine, Ballinascreen and Glen as favourites to progress whilst the tie of the Intermediate Championship will be between near neighbours Ballerin and Kilrea. Drumsurn should provide too much for Glack in the Junior Championship, although Championship season can be a funny time. These games will take place over the first weekend in July.

Derry defeat Antrim in National league
Derry 2-17 Antrim 2-03 By the end of the hour, Derry had a convincing win over Antrim in Coleraine. There was little between the teams in the first half, as shown by the half-time scoreline of 0-5 to 1-0. After the break, Derry looked much more assured, taking control in key sectors of the field, with particularly strong performances from Claire Doherty, Grainne McGoldrick and Briege Convery. Key to the victory was Briege’s effectiveness in cancelling out the threat of Jane Adams. This was a very promising start to the league for Derry, with all 6 starting forwards getting their name on the scoresheet.

St Mary’s live to fight another day
St.Mary's Magherafelt 0-11, Presentation College Athenry 3-2 Despite it looking like their day on Saturday, St Mary’s were lucky to grab a draw late in the game. The Magherafelt looked the stronger side for most of the match and things were looking promising with 10 minutes to go but Athenry, who looked dangerous on the break, hit the back of the net with 5 minutes to go. Justice was served with an equaliser in injury time. St Mary’s may feel aggrieved by a number of decisions by officials at this stage of the game but will also feel that the game was there was there for the taking. This is a very strong and complete Convent team who should not be afraid of the replay against Athenry, scheduled for 24th March.
